Learn How To Cook This New Year
Teaching children how to cook is a wonderful opportunity and a great start to teach how to become independent. Cooking should not be relegated only to mothers and the house help. If all family members should eat together at the dining table, then why shouldn’t they cook together as well? In fact, I think it is great if all members of the family are involved in cooking for the whole family.
The great thing about teaching kids cooking skills is that it involves learning many things – from chemistry, to culture and geography. Kids are always open-minded, adventurous and creative when trying out new activities and endeavors. Also, teaching children about cooking gives them knowledge about a variety of foods and flavor, about presenting dishes, and on becoming a sophisticated and nutritious eater. Best of all, teaching your kids how to cook can be a great bonding activity for everyone.
Instead of just letting the children stay home in front of the computer, playing computer games or Play station, or watching reruns of The Simpsons, why not enroll the kids in a cooking program? In Port-Colborne’s After School Approach called Health and Youth, children and teenagers between the ages of seven to fifteen can enroll in an after school program offered for free. The Community Living eight-week after-school cooking program is funded by the local office of the Ministry of Health and Promotion. The feedback from the participants has been very positive so far. For instance, twelve-year old Marissa Dottorio thinks that the program is a better alternative in using her time wisely, and to get away from home and school. She likes the things they have been learning in class and she is able to make new friends.
Likewise, Danielle Rock also enjoys the opportunity for her to cook desserts in the classes. She also enjoyed the other activities such as yoga and arts and crafts. The classes typically start at 4 p.m. and ends at 6:30 p.m. with around twelve children in each class. The children can do many activities besides cooking like playing games, learning how to kick box and dance. Cooking menus begin from the most basic, such as a light vegetable snack or sandwich and a pudding for dessert. As the classes progress and as the kids learn about basic food preparations, more challenging meals are presented. They also learn how to cook food with cookware such as a dutch oven. One can refer to the Dutch oven ebook for Dutch oven information on ways to use this common kitchenware.

Ideas For Desserts (when cooking for a date)?
I’m cooking dinner for a girl I just started dating. Looking for some ideas for desserts…like romantic deserts (if such a thing exists).
Something small though as we usually don’t order desserts when we’re out and something that doesn’t take too long to make (as I don’t have too large of a window to cook everything). I’m thinking some kind of chocolate mousse or something with ice cream and creame de menthe (and other fix-ins)?
Thanks!
Cooking With Youngsters; Have Fun and Learn
Cooking with Youngsters; Have Fun and Learn
A lot of opportunities can be found to spend time with youngsters, teaching them introductory cooking, having a good time, building self-esteem and supporting family growth. Many youngsters, (we’ll just address girls here if we may, although boys might have the same interest), start showing significant interest in family responsibility type activities at 8 to 10 years. This can be manifested in many ways as there are so many things that must be accomplished in the typical household. Cooking together can be a great way for girls to really get to know various members of the family or community as well as getting lessons with lifetime benefit.
When girls start to indicate an interest in cooking, it may or may not be with their mothers. If it is with their mothers the interest is likely more attuned to helping out; if the interest is indicated with another family member it possibly indicates a desire to learn a new activity.
The age and experience of a young girl impacts the complexity of the dish and recipe, time spent actually cooking, and of course safety concerns. Youngsters are learning and maturing very rapidly and there can be a large difference between ages 8 and 10.
Another important consideration is how “serious” joint cooking activities will be. On the younger end the project might need to be seen as a form of play, with plenty of time for zigs and zags back and forth to other activities. As the young cooks mature, they will have more interest in “staying the course” through a dish or recipe, and then moving to another possibly overlapping dish. It is sometimes a challenge to pick just the right level of encouragement to “stay on task” vs. letting the right amount of play time in. It’s usually the wise choice to make it a lot of fun and let the concentration come naturally with maturity.
Choosing appropriate recipes is easy and if possible can be done jointly with the aspiring cook. Desserts are always good choices led by cupcakes, brownies, fruit bars, etc. Another good choice because it is easy and you get a lot of output is to make pancakes. There are an unlimited number of choices of course. Simple recipes and short preparation times are important early on in the process.
When girls at these ages have the opportunity to make something real, with new skills and having fun, and having that result be something that is good to eat and brings a lot of compliments, they get an important sense of satisfaction and self-esteem. As the joint cooking proceeds a steady improvement will be seen in handling the various tasks, moving from the small steps to overseeing the entire recipe.
If you are very fortunate and have the opportunity to share your cooking experience and knowledge with a young girl and get some consistency to the activity, there are some very attractive and appropriate gifts that can go along with the cooking. Available on the internet are a variety of children’s chef’s hats, aprons, bib aprons, chef’s jackets & coats, etc. These are
easy to find on the internet and some come in wild colors. They will make excellent gifts for the aspiring cook and reinforce an enjoyable and very useful skill.

The three-figure kitchen makeover
Living with an undersize, outdated kitchen? If so, a sledgehammer may feel like the only solution. But these days you’re probably not up for spending the $50,000 or more — maybe much more — it would cost to demolish the space and build a new state-of-the-art room from scratch.
